Idle
Language centres on the three-channel animated video installation I
don’t understand the words you use,
exploring experiences of linguistic and institutional alienation
within the psychiatry and the healthcare system. The exhibition focuses
on the relationship between the individual, bureaucracy, and
standardized treatment pathways.
The video draws on the logic and aesthetics of platform video
games as a metaphor for navigating healthcare. Like a game character
moving through a linear world governed by fixed rules and obstacles,
the protagonist is confined to predetermined routes, reflecting the
limited agency often experienced when seeking care within rigid
institutional systems.

The exhibition title, Idle Language, refers to the
concept of "idle" in video games, where a character remains
present within a system but is suspended in a state of waiting or
passive progression. At the same time, it points to the institutional
language of healthcare - a language that can feel detached from lived
experience, reducing patients to passive participants within
bureaucratic structures.

The video installation is
expanded with the work Pat, a sculptural representation of
the work’s blob-like/ Pac-Man-inspired protagonist, and the image
series The air has a taste of saline water, which explores
the labyrinthine logic of healthcare systems and the often impossible
task of translating subjective experiences into the language of
documentation, diagnosis, and bureaucracy.

Rest and Routine – Duet for Sanatorium and Modern Hospital is an electronic duet and sound installation which tells the story of a tuberculosis sanatorium in the early 1900s and a contemporary hospital seeking new answers to what the healthcare system might look like. The piece uses the duet form from classical opera to create a
dialogue between past and present values in healthcare.

The exhibition space was covered with a linoleum floor with lasercut engravings depicting a floor plan of a modern hospital, while the duet’s lyrics were projected onto the walls, inspired by classical opera surtitles, forming a kind of poetic karaoke that guides
the audience through the narrative.

At the finissage of the exhibition, a performance developed in collaboration with performance artist Karoline C. Holland unfolded within the exhibition - a duet between the modern hospital and the sanatorium, appearing as a ghost from the past.

I have gotten used to speaking in fragments because that is how I receive information is a collection of texts and material based on conversations between Cecilie Penney and three of her friends who all have experiences as patients in different departments of the Danish healthcare system. The book consists of fragments that portray encounters with therapists, forms, and treatment plans from the patient’s perspective. It explores society’s perception of illness and what it means to conform to or fail within the current system.
The book is published by Forlaget Nightcore - an independent publisher run by artist Mathias Riis Andersen. Forlaget Nightcore Mainly publishes debutants in poetry, artist books and new danish drama.

Video excerpt

I don’t understand the words you use is a three-screen 3D animation about a character trying to navigate the healthcare system. The work draws on the aesthetics and structure of the computer game genre of “platform games”, where the character moves from left to right, confronting enemies and obstacles, and are often seen from a flat/straight-on perspective with a scrolling background environment. The storyline is based on the stories of three friends’ experiences of trying to maneuver through different departments of
the healthcare system.

	The
work Big
Ear is based on the radio signal "The Wow! signal" which was
recorded at Ohio State University's observatory “Big Ear” on
August 15th, 1977. The radio signal was more than 50.000 times
stronger than what had previously been recorded, leading researchers
to wonder if it could be a message from aliens. In the installation,
the visitor experiences
an interpretation of
Big
Ear's "flat reflector", which captured signals from the
sky. An LED screen in the ratio 1:35 is programmed to flash
in varying intensities
based on data from the time period when "The
Wow!
signal" was recorded.

The
light
installation is synced
with a video of scenes from
American sci fi movies that were made in the time period of the Big
Ear observatory’s existence from 1963-1998. The video is edited
with a code based on the same data as the light installation and
depicts different fictional interpretations of first encounters
between humans and extraterrestrial beings.

Between the earth and the moon, there is one full tone investigates the philosophy
“The music of the spheres” which was formulated by Phytagoras in ancient Greece and
later developed by astronomer Johannes Kepler in the 16th century. Phytagoras identified
the different intervals of musical tones by deviding a single string into different
lengths. He believed that this theory could also be applied to the relation beetween the
earth, the moon, the planets and the sun and that tonal intervals excisted in the distances
between the celestial bodies, for instance that there was one full tone between the
earth and the moon.

The work consists of two parts; a 6 voice sound greeting to outer space, and an animation interpretting “The music of the spheres” through a geocentric world view.

Are you well
(2021)
Laser-cut acrylic sculpture70x 70 cm.

Are you well is an acrylic sculpture with a laser-printed pattern resembling a crop circle formation. Report of crop circles increased around the 1970’s, especially in England, and
the mystery of how they appear has made a lot of people believe tha they are created by aliens. The sculpture
was dug into the ground resembling a sewage cover, a portal or a communication link to another place. The
engraved text “Are you well” is a reference to one of the audio greetings to alien beings that were sent out with
“The Golden Record” by NASA in 1977.

Form dig som en kugle(2020)

3D animation, soundDuration: 12:56
Sound design: Søren Vøgg Lyster

Video excerpt

Form dig som en kugle(Roll up into a ball) consists of a map over Aarhus (DK) with blinking hotspots representing 5 different locations that
where all central to a personal experience of overcoming mental illness. Each hotspot leads the viewer to an
animation of one of the locations. The architecture is filled with
holes and glitches resembling how one can feel when dealing with depression. The voice over in the work is
based on excerpts from medical journals and personal notes. The work has been exhibited both as a four screen
installation and as an interactive online work, where the viewer could navigate between the blinking hotspot
